The BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test) measures your ability to use Japanese in professional settings. Unlike general JLPT, it focuses on real-world business communication: emails, meetings, phone calls, and workplace documents. Understanding the exam pattern is the first step to a smart study plan.
BJT Exam Structure Overview
The BJT is a single-session test divided into three sections. You answer all questions in one sitting, with no breaks between sections. The total test time is approximately 120 minutes (2 hours).
| Section | Time | Number of Questions | |---------|------|-------------------| | Listening | ~45 minutes | 40 | | Reading | ~45 minutes | 40 | | Integrated (Listening + Reading) | ~30 minutes | 20 |
Note: Exact times may vary slightly by test administration. Always check the official BJT guide before your exam.
Section 1: Listening (約45分 / 40問)
This section tests your ability to understand spoken Japanese in business contexts. You'll hear dialogues, announcements, and instructions.
Question types include:
- Short conversations (2-4 exchanges) followed by a comprehension question
- Longer monologues (meetings, presentations) with multiple questions
- Phone conversations where you identify key information (names, numbers, dates)
- Listening to instructions and selecting the correct action
Each audio is played once only. You cannot replay. Answers are multiple-choice (4 options).
Section 2: Reading (約45分 / 40問)
Reading evaluates your comprehension of written business Japanese. Texts range from short emails to longer reports and contracts.
Question types include:
- Email comprehension: identify purpose, required action, or missing information
- Document analysis: read a memo, schedule, or invoice and answer questions
- Vocabulary in context: choose the correct word or phrase for a business situation
- Grammar: complete sentences with appropriate business expressions (keigo, humble forms)
All texts are authentic business documents. No furigana is provided for kanji beyond N2 level.
Section 3: Integrated (Listening + Reading) (約30分 / 20問)
This section combines both skills. You listen to an audio clip while reading related written material, then answer questions that require synthesizing information from both sources.
Examples:
- Listen to a voicemail while reading a meeting agenda → identify the conflict
- Hear a client's complaint while reading a product manual → choose the correct response
- Listen to a manager's instructions while reading a schedule → find the error
This section mimics real office multitasking. Speed and accuracy are critical.
Marking Scheme
BJT uses a scaled scoring system from 0 to 800 points. There is no penalty for wrong answers — only correct responses count toward your score.
- Listening section: ~40% of total score (approx 320 points)
- Reading section: ~40% of total score (approx 320 points)
- Integrated section: ~20% of total score (approx 160 points)
Raw scores (number correct) are converted to scaled scores. The conversion varies by test form to maintain consistency across administrations.
Pass Criteria
BJT does not have a pass/fail designation. Instead, it assigns a proficiency level based on your scaled score:
| Score Range | Level | Description | |------------|-------|-------------| | 600-800 | J1+ | Can handle complex business negotiations and documents independently | | 530-599 | J1 | Can manage most business situations with occasional support | | 420-529 | J2 | Can handle routine business tasks but struggles with complex scenarios | | 320-419 | J3 | Can understand simple business Japanese in familiar contexts | | 200-319 | J4 | Limited business Japanese ability; basic comprehension only | | 0-199 | J5 | Minimal business Japanese proficiency |
Most employers and universities look for J2 (420+) or higher. J1+ is considered advanced professional level.
How to Prepare
- Focus on keigo (honorific, humble, polite forms) — it appears in every section
- Practice with real business documents: emails, meeting minutes, invoices
- Train your ear with business podcasts and news (NHK Business News is excellent)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring keigo nuances: Using wrong honorific level can change meaning entirely
- Skimming too fast: Business documents often have critical details in footnotes or appendices
- Not managing time: The integrated section is the most time-pressured — allocate 90 seconds per question
- Overlooking negative questions: Questions asking "which is NOT correct" are common
Scoring Tips
- Answer every question — no negative marking
- In listening, focus on key information: names, numbers, actions required
- In reading, scan for structural clues: headings, bullet points, bold text
- For integrated questions, read the text before listening to the audio
