Understanding the BJT Score Scale
The Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) provides a granular score from 0 to 800, calculated using item response theory (IRT). Unlike the JLPT, which uses a pass/fail system for distinct levels, the BJT offers a continuous scale. This allows for a more nuanced understanding of a candidate's business Japanese ability. The official BJT site (kanken.or.jp/bjt/english/) details this scale, which maps to six proficiency levels:
- J1+ (600–800): Sufficient Japanese to perform any business duty in any situation.
- J1 (530–599): Sufficient Japanese to perform business duties in a wide range of situations.
- J2 (420–529): Sufficient Japanese to perform business duties in limited situations.
- J3 (320–419): Some Japanese to perform business duties in limited situations.
- J4 (200–319): Some Japanese to perform simple business duties in limited situations.
- J5 (0–199): Very limited Japanese ability for business.
When reviewing a CV, a candidate listing a BJT score should be evaluated against the specific demands of the role. For instance, a position requiring extensive client interaction might ideally seek a J1 or J1+ candidate, while a role with more internal communication might be suitable for a J2 or even a strong J3.
