What is JEE Main?
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is the first stage of India's premier engineering entrance exam. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it is the gateway to undergraduate engineering programs at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs). It also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission to IITs.
The exam is held multiple times a year (typically in January, April, and May sessions). Candidates can appear in up to three attempts across consecutive years. Scores are normalized across sessions using percentile ranking. The best of all attempts is considered for final merit.

Exam Format at a Glance
- Mode: Computer-based test (CBT) for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech); Paper 2A (B.Arch) has a drawing test on paper.
- Sections: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (Paper 1); Aptitude, Drawing, Mathematics (Paper 2A).
- Total Questions: 90 (Paper 1: 30 per subject).
- Question Types: Multiple choice (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT).
- Duration: 3 hours (3.5 hours for PwD candidates).
- Marking: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect MCQ; no negative for NAT.
- Maximum Marks: 300 (Paper 1).
- Language: English, Hindi, and other regional languages as per NTA's list.
Who Takes It / Who Accepts It
JEE Main is taken by students who have completed or are appearing for Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. It is accepted by:
- National Institutes of Technology (NITs) – 31 autonomous institutes.
- Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) – 25 centrally funded IIITs.
- Other CFTIs – e.g., IIEST Shibpur, Sant Longowal Institute.
- State Engineering Colleges – many states use JEE Main ranks for admission.
- Private Institutions – many accept JEE Main scores for their B.Tech programs.
- JEE Advanced Qualifier – top 2.5 lakh rankers are eligible for IITs.
Quick Prep Roadmap (3–6 Months)
- Month 1–2 (Foundation): Revise Class 11 and 12 NCERT textbooks for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Focus on conceptual clarity, not just formulas.
- Month 3 (Practice): Solve chapter-wise problems from previous years (at least 10 years). Identify weak areas.
- Month 4 (Mock Tests): Begin taking full-length mock tests under timed conditions. Analyze mistakes and revisit concepts.
- Month 5 (Speed & Accuracy): Increase mock frequency to 2–3 per week. Work on time management and negative marking avoidance.
