JEE Main — B.E./B.Tech Eligibility 2026 — Age, Education, Nationality

If you are planning to appear for JEE Main to secure a seat in B.E. or B.Tech programs, you need to understand the eligibility criteria before you register. The rules cover educational qualifications, age limits, nationality, and special provisions for reserved categories. Missing any of these can disqualify your application, so read carefully.

Educational Qualification Requirements

You must have passed the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in 2024, 2025, or be appearing in 2026. The exam should be from a recognized board — CBSE, state boards, or equivalent international boards.

Mandatory subjects in Class 12:

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Any one of: Mathematics, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject

For B.E./B.Tech, Mathematics is compulsory. If you did not take Mathematics in Class 12, you are not eligible for this paper.

Minimum marks in Class 12:

• General & OBC-NCL: 75% aggregate in five subjects (or in the top 20 percentile of your board)
• SC/ST/PwD: 65% aggregate in five subjects (or in the top 20 percentile of your board)

If you are appearing in 2026, you can still apply provisionally. Your admission will be confirmed only if you meet the marks criterion when results are declared.

Age Limit

There is no age limit for JEE Main — B.E./B.Tech. Candidates of any age can apply. This was confirmed by the NTA in recent years. However, check the official information bulletin for any updates — the age rule has remained unchanged since 2022.

Nationality and Residency

You are eligible if you are:

• An Indian citizen
• A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) / Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder
• A foreign national (only for seats in institutes that accept foreign nationals under supernumerary quotas)

PIO/OCI candidates are treated at par with Indian citizens for JEE Main. However, for JEE Advanced and IIT admissions, separate rules apply.

Number of Attempts

You can attempt JEE Main a maximum of three times in consecutive years. For example, if you first appeared in 2024, your last attempt is 2026. There is no limit on the number of attempts per year — you can appear in both January and April sessions.

Special Category Rules

SC/ST/OBC-NCL

• No separate application for category benefit — you must upload a valid certificate during registration.
• OBC-NCL certificate must be issued after April 1 of the current year (e.g., for 2026, certificate dated on or after April 1, 2025).
• SC/ST certificates have no such date restriction.

Persons with Disability (PwD)

• Minimum 40% disability as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
• You need a valid PwD certificate from a government medical board.
• PwD candidates get a 5% relaxation in the aggregate marks requirement (65% instead of 75% for general).

EWS (Economically Weaker Sections)

• EWS certificate must be issued by a competent authority and should be valid for the current financial year.
• Family income must be less than ₹8 lakh per annum (excluding income from agriculture).

Defence/Kashmiri Migrants

• Specific supernumerary seats are reserved for children of defence personnel and Kashmiri migrants. Check the official JEE Main brochure for the list of eligible defence categories.

Important Note on Domicile and State Quota

JEE Main scores are used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. For state engineering colleges, domicile rules vary. You must check the respective state counselling authority’s eligibility criteria — JEE Main rank alone may not guarantee a seat in a state college.

How to Verify Your Eligibility

2. 2Check your Class 12 board’s equivalence and subject list.
3. 3Ensure your category certificate (if applicable) meets the date and format requirements.
4. 4For PwD candidates, get your disability certificate from a government hospital.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Assuming your board’s top 20 percentile is automatically calculated — it is, but verify your board’s previous year cutoff.
• Using an expired OBC-NCL certificate — it must be issued after April 1 of the current year.
• Applying for B.E./B.Tech without Mathematics in Class 12 — you will be rejected at the time of document verification.
• Ignoring the three-attempt limit — if you have already appeared three times, you cannot apply again.
