If you are an overseas nurse aiming to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK, your English language proficiency is non-negotiable. The NMC accepts two main tests: IELTS Academic and OET. This guide covers the specific IELTS band scores, clubbing rules, and steps to submit your results for 2026.
NMC IELTS Academic Requirements
The NMC requires a minimum overall band score of 7.0 in IELTS Academic, with no less than 7.0 in each of the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. This is a strict requirement – any score below 7.0 in any section means you must retake the test.
Clubbing Rules: Combining Scores from Two Tests
If you do not achieve 7.0 in all sections in one sitting, you can “club” scores from two IELTS test sittings, provided:
- Both tests are taken within 6 months of each other.
- In each sitting, you score no less than 6.5 in any section.
- You have no fail (i.e., no section below 6.5) in any sitting.
- You submit both Test Report Forms (TRFs) together.
Example: Sitting 1: L7.5, R7.0, W6.5, S6.5. Sitting 2: L7.0, R7.0, W7.0, S7.0. The clubbed result meets 7.0 in each section. But if Sitting 1 had a 6.0 in Writing, it cannot be used.
OET vs. IELTS: Which One Should You Take?
The NMC also accepts OET with a minimum grade B in each of the four sub-tests. OET is specifically designed for healthcare professionals, so the content is clinical. Many nurses find OET more relevant, but IELTS is more widely available. Both are equally accepted – choose based on your comfort.
How to Submit Your IELTS Results to NMC
- 1Take the test at an IDP or British Council centre (Academic module only).
- 2Request your TRF – the original, not a photocopy. The NMC does not accept online verification codes.
- 3Send both TRFs (if clubbing) to the NMC by post or courier. Address: NMC, 23 Portland Place, London W1B 1PZ, UK.
- 4Include your NMC application reference number on the envelope.
- 5Keep copies – the NMC may take 4-6 weeks to process.

Common Mistakes Nurses Make
1. Submitting Expired TRFs
IELTS TRFs are valid for 2 years from the test date. The NMC will reject any result older than that. Always check the date before sending.
2. Wrong Test Type
Only IELTS Academic is accepted. IELTS General Training or Life Skills are not. Double-check your test slip.
3. Missing the Clubbing Window
If you plan to club scores, ensure both tests are within 6 months. If you take a third test outside that window, the earlier scores become invalid for clubbing.
4. Sending Photocopies or Scans
The NMC requires original TRFs. Photocopies or emailed PDFs are not accepted. Use a reliable courier service.
5. Not Verifying with NMC
Requirements can change. Always verify on the official NMC portal as 2026 cycles open. Do not rely solely on third-party blogs.
