If you are a nurse from India planning to work abroad, you have likely come across the IELTS requirement. But which version do you need? Academic or General Training?
This confusion is common, and the answer depends on your destination and purpose. Let’s break it down clearly.
The Short Answer
For nursing registration – with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) in Canada – you must take IELTS Academic.
General Training is accepted only for visa applications (e.g., UK Skilled Worker visa) or points-based immigration (e.g., Express Entry for Canadian Permanent Residency).
Why IELTS Academic for Registration?
Regulatory bodies assess your ability to communicate in a professional healthcare environment. Academic IELTS uses texts and tasks that reflect academic and clinical settings – reading journal articles, writing reports, and understanding lectures. General Training focuses on everyday social and workplace English, which is not considered rigorous enough for registration.
NMC (UK)
The NMC requires IELTS Academic with:
- Listening: 7.0
- Reading: 7.0
- Writing: 6.5
- Speaking: 7.0
- Overall: 7.0
AHPRA (Australia)
AHPRA accepts IELTS Academic (or OET) with minimum 7.0 in each band.
NNAS (Canada)
NNAS requires IELTS Academic with at least 7.0 in each band for most provinces.

When Is General Training Enough?
General Training is accepted for:
- UK Skilled Worker visa (after NMC registration) – you can use Academic or General, but the visa authority (UKVI) requires a specific test (IELTS for UKVI).
- New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category – Immigration New Zealand accepts General Training for points.
- Canada Express Entry – for Permanent Residency, General Training is accepted.
Do You Need Both?
In some cases, yes. For example:
- You are applying for NMC registration (Academic) and also need to claim points for a UK visa (General Training may be accepted, but often the same Academic score suffices).
- You are heading to Canada: NNAS requires Academic, but if you later apply for PR through Express Entry, you may need General Training unless your Academic scores are high enough (check IRCC’s equivalency).
Rule of thumb: Always check the specific requirement of the regulatory body first. If you need both, plan to take Academic – it covers more bases.
