JEE Advanced is the gateway to India's top engineering institutes — the IITs. But before you dive into preparation, you need to be sure you actually qualify. This page covers every eligibility condition: education, age, nationality, category, and the number of attempts. No fluff, just what you need to know.
Educational Qualification Requirements
You must have passed the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in either 2024, 2025, or 2026. Candidates appearing in 2026 are also eligible, provided their results are declared before the JEE Advanced registration deadline.
Key points:
- You must have taken at least five subjects in Class XII: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and any two others (language, vocational, etc.).
- The board must be recognized by the Indian education system (CBSE, ISC, state boards, etc.).
- No minimum percentage is required for general category — but you must have passed. For SC/ST/PwD, a pass in Class XII is sufficient.
- If you took the exam in 2023 or earlier, you are not eligible — even if you scored well.
Age Limit
There is no upper age limit for JEE Advanced. However, you must have been born on or after October 1, 2001 (for general category). For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the age relaxation is 5 years — born on or after October 1, 1996.
Important: These dates are set by IITs each year. Always verify the current year's age criteria on the official JEE Advanced website.
Nationality & Residency
JEE Advanced is open to:
- Indian nationals
- Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) / Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders
- Foreign nationals (subject to specific rules — they are not eligible for IIT seats but can appear for the exam)
There is no domicile requirement. You can apply from any state in India or from abroad.
Number of Attempts
You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in consecutive years. If you appeared in 2025, you can also appear in 2026. If you skipped 2025, you still have two attempts starting from your first appearance.
Note: If you took JEE Advanced in 2024 and again in 2025, you have exhausted your attempts. You cannot appear in 2026.
Special Category Rules (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD)
Reservation is applied during seat allocation, not during eligibility. But you must produce valid certificates at the time of counselling.
- SC/ST: No minimum Class XII marks required — just a pass. Age relaxation of 5 years.
- OBC-NCL: Must be in the non-creamy layer. Certificates must be issued after April 1 of the relevant year.
- EWS: Economically Weaker Sections — annual family income less than ₹8 lakh (verify the latest threshold).
- PwD: 5-year age relaxation. Minimum disability of 40% as per government norms.
Important: If you claim a category benefit, you must submit the certificate during registration. Late submissions are not accepted.
Additional Requirements
- You must have secured a rank in JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1 or Paper 2) to be eligible for JEE Advanced.
- There is no separate application for JEE Advanced — you are automatically considered if you meet the JEE Main cutoff.
- Candidates who have accepted a seat in any IIT (through JoSAA) in a previous year are not eligible to appear again — even if they withdrew.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking that a high JEE Main score guarantees JEE Advanced eligibility — it doesn't. You still need to meet the Class XII year criteria.
- Assuming that appearing for JEE Advanced twice means you can appear in non-consecutive years. No, attempts are counted consecutively.
- Forgetting to upload category certificates in the correct format — scanned PDFs only, under 200 KB.
What Happens If You Don't Meet Eligibility?
Your candidature will be cancelled at any stage — even after the exam or during counselling. There is no refund of fees. Always double-check your documents before applying.
