UGC NET Nursing — Assistant Professor + JRF, both decided in one sitting

You don't choose — one exam, two awards. Every candidate who qualifies the overall cut-off (40% UR / 35% reserved aggregate) gets Assistant Professor eligibility. The top ~6% of qualifiers (roughly 99th percentile within the qualified pool) are additionally awarded JRF, which adds a research fellowship stipend on top. You can use Assistant Professor eligibility to apply for faculty posts in any UGC-recognised nursing institution; JRF lets you pursue PhD with funding. Assistant Professor eligibility through UGC NET Nursing is lifetime-valid — once you qualify, you never have to take this exam again. JRF, in contrast, has a 3-year validity (extendable to 5 once you join a PhD as SRF). This dual-validity quirk is why even working nurses with no immediate JRF ambition still target the qualifying cut-off — the Assistant Professor certificate alone is a permanent career asset.

Assistant Professor eligibility has NO age limit — you can attempt UGC NET Nursing at any age. JRF has an upper limit of 30 years (as of 1st of the month of exam), with relaxations: +5 years for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/female candidates and transgender applicants; +5 years for research experience in a relevant area; +3 years for LLM degree holders. Armed forces personnel get up to 5 years' relaxation as per service rules.

Paper I (50 MCQs, 100 marks) is a generic 'teaching & research aptitude' paper — research methodology, teaching aptitude, communication, mathematical reasoning, logical reasoning, data interpretation, ICT, people & environment, higher-education system. It's identical across all NET subjects. Paper II (100 MCQs, 200 marks) is pure Nursing — 10 units covering Nursing Foundations, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical-Surgical, OBG, Paediatric, Community Health, Mental Health, Nursing Education, Research, and Management. Paper I is what catches nursing candidates off-guard: clinically strong M.Sc. graduates have often never done a data-interpretation set or a syllogism since their B.Sc. entrance exam.

UGC NET Nursing follows the standard Government of India reservation policy as adopted by UGC. Qualifying cut-off for Assistant Professor is 40% aggregate for Unreserved / EWS / OBC-NCL candidates and 35% aggregate for SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender. For JRF, the same percentile logic applies but within each category's qualified pool. Eligibility requires M.Sc. Nursing (or equivalent) with 55% (relaxed to 50% for reserved categories and PhD holders under earlier UGC regulations).

JRF currently pays approximately ₹37,000 per month for the first two years of your PhD, plus an annual HRA / contingency grant as per host institution rules. After two years, on satisfactory progress review (typically tied to coursework completion + first publication), you're upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) at approximately ₹42,000 per month for the remaining three years. The 100 Paper II MCQs are distributed roughly proportionally across all 10 units, but historical analysis shows Medical-Surgical Nursing (Unit 4), Community Health Nursing (Unit 6), and Nursing Research & Statistics (Unit 9) consistently account for ~45% of questions combined. Nursing Foundations and Anatomy & Physiology give easy marks if revised early.
