The specialty gate — not a licensing exam
MRCP(UK) is the postgraduate diploma in internal medicine awarded by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow). Part 1 is the broadest-coverage written paper — designed to assess the full range of internal medicine knowledge before you progress to clinical assessments.
- Conducting body: Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK (RCP London + RCP Edinburgh + RCP&S Glasgow).
- Eligibility: Recognised MBBS/MD + at least 12 months post-graduate experience in medical employment. GMC registration not required.
- Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) — delivered at Pearson VUE centres worldwide, including major Indian cities.
- Structure: 2 papers × 3 hours = 6 hours on the same day, 100 MCQs per paper, 200 total.
- Question format: Best-of-five — five options, exactly one correct. No "all of the above"; no extended matching.
- Marking: +1 for correct, 0 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted — attempt every question.
- Pass standard: Equated scaled score, typically ~62% raw. Adjusted per-diet for question difficulty.
