JLPT N2 exam format — business and academic Japanese

N2 introduces integrated-comprehension listening and demanding long-form reading. The 75-minute grammar + reading block is brutal — most unsuccessful candidates run out of time on the last reading passage.

Most undergraduate and master's programmes taught in Japanese require N2. Some accept N3 + EJU, but N2 widens scholarship eligibility significantly.

N2 vs BJT — which should I take for IT jobs in Japan?

For IT and engineering jobs in Japan, N2 is the universal baseline — almost every Japanese tech recruiter filters CVs on JLPT level. BJT (J2/J3) is a powerful supplement when you want to signal business-Japanese maturity, especially for client-facing roles, project management, or consulting positions. The strongest profile is N2 + BJT J2 — together they tell employers you can handle both technical Japanese and corporate communication.

Is N2 enough to study at a Japanese university?

Most undergraduate Japanese-taught programmes accept N2. However, top national universities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku, Nagoya) often want N1 or a strong EJU Japanese score in addition to N2. For graduate-school admissions in Japanese-taught tracks, N2 is the minimum and N1 widens scholarship eligibility (MEXT, JASSO).

Does JLPT N2 expire?

No. JLPT N2 has lifetime validity. For employment purposes, the certificate should typically be from within the last 5–10 years to remain a strong signal.

What is the JLPT N2 exam fee in India?

Approximately ₹2,400–₹2,500 in India. N2 and N1 are typically slightly more expensive than the lower levels. Fees are paid through the Japan Foundation New Delhi and authorised test cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad.

How long does it take to go from N3 to N2?

Most learners need 9–12 months of consistent study (2 hours daily) to bridge N3 to N2. Kanji jumps from ~650 to ~1,000, grammar abstraction grows sharply, and reading passages double in length. The most common failure section is reading — typical candidates run out of time. Practise full-length timed mocks weekly.
